              Medical Coding is the conversion of a patient's healthcare diagnosis, treatment received, medical processes by a healthcare professional or a doctor into alphanumeric codes. Medical billing is the process in which these medical codes are sent to insurance companies to claim insurance for payment purposes. These codes must be accurate as they make up the whole payment purposes.

                  Medical Coders uses a certain set of codes for coding purposes, they are mainly ICD, CPT and HCPCS. ICD codes or International Classification of Diseases are set of diagnostic codes assigned and managed by World Health Organisation (WHO). They includes signs and symptoms or any other abnormal findings on a patient. For instance ICD code E75.22 denotes Gaucher disease.  

                Gaucher disease is a rare, inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosides. This enzyme is important in breaking down certain fats, called glucocerebrosides, that are found in cells throughout the body. When the enzyme is absent or deficient, the fat accumulates in cells of the spleen, liver, lungs, bone marrow and, sometimes, brain.

              Symptoms of Gaucher disease can include enlarged liver and spleen, anemia, low blood platelet count, bone pain and fractures, lung and kidney problems, and neurological problems. 

Common symptoms of Gaucher disease include: 

• An enlarged spleen and/or liver Low blood counts (anemia, low platelets, and/or low white blood cells) 

• Bone pain, fractures, and/or joint pain 

• Skeletal deformities (such as a curved spine or bowed legs) 

• Neurological problems (such as seizures, difficulty walking, and/or dementia) 

• Lung, heart, or kidney problems 

• Yellow spots on the whites of the eyes 

• Easy bruising or bleeding 

• Fatigue 

• Weight loss 

• Enlarged lymph nodes 

• Swelling of the hands and feet

Treatment for Gaucher disease can include enzyme replacement therapy, substrate reduction therapy, and bone marrow transplantation.
